It is literally the only issue.
could someone shed some light on the available effects in the latest firmware as the manual is quite outdated. so there are two fx slots per track, are the same effects available on both? what are they? are there two fx slots also on the master track?
I would imagine thatās what nearly everyone on this forum would do anywayā¦ Elektron parameter locks and trig conditions are vastly preferable to a simple built-in sequencer that is really only there to audition individual patches.
I just bought an SP-16, and Iām wondering if thereās a way to increase the internal memory and load samples to tracks/projects from a usb drive without loading them onto the machine (basically run them off the usb drive).
No there isnāt, you can load 16 samples per scene, and you have 16 scenes, so 256 samples in memory total, it has 256mb ram so each sample can be upto 1mb or just under 4 seconds if you use all 256 evenly.
Seems kind of strange to me, but you can use longer samples if you donāt need all the slots, or if you use lots of short drum sounds etc.
USB streaming would be great though.
My thinking was that usb streaming would be nice, since the internal memory is a bit small (2 gb?). That can be filled up quickly with just a few sample packs, plus the demo files and Loopmaster files that come with the machine. I guess the only work around is to remove the demos and store them somewhere else.
Sadly, that mean we need computer to properly organise SP samples.
I recently cleared my internal memory and saved all projects and samples on my USB drive as packages (includes samples as well). 64Gb USB drive is more than I need.
Now I save all Projects as packages on USB, default saving is the internal memory I think.
I keep my internal memory for recordings only now and move them if more is needed. Yeah, DAW required.
Streaming from USB would be nice, but for me personally not needed.
Hey Renn, how much total space do you get once you clear factory presets ?
If you mean deleting the Loopmaster factory presets which are 2 GB you get almost 8 GB of free internal memory, a bit less which I do not remember exactly. I did that immediately when I got my SP-16.
Edited: 256 RAM and 8 GB internal flash memory
So the SP-16 can hold 8mb of samples in its internal memory? Without the need to load something from the stick?
8 GB you mean, yes (internal flash memory)
Edit: Sampling time (RAM) is 256mb
I started transferring my stuff to my 64 GB USB drive, when internal memory reached 7 GB, only keeping the āsavedā folder which is created by default when you save recordings you made with the SP-16.
Before that I actually wasnāt aware, or did not care, that I saved all my stuff to my internal memory by default. This works at least for me, others may do it different. I hope this helps
It does 8GB is a lot. 8mb, not so much
One of the reasons Iāve never considered the SP-16 for real is the lack of streaming. I use a lot of 128-bar or longer stems. But I could work with the 60 sec limit (itās around there, right?) for each sample is memory is enough.
Iād put 8GB in the āenoughā category.
The sampling length can be set in [REC LENGTH].
-
You can set the value from 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 beats and MANUAL.
-
If you select MANUAL, you can finish sampling by pressing the same performance pad. If you donāt press the performance pad, the sampling continues up to 64 seconds.
Yes, 8 GB should be enough I guess
I love the live sampling on the SP 16 very much, seems to have very good converters. I really love the results and it is quick.
How does it handle 16 bar samples, considering the 64-step sequencer? Letās say I record the most epic 16 bars or 64 seconds ever. Iāve never figured out how I go about using them, considering the sequencerās approach.
From the sequencers approach? You mean setting trigs and so on? Choose a pad, load the loop, or keep it in the just reorded place and set trigs as you wish. Choose start points in the sample if needed. Nudge per step if wished. Not sure it that was your question though
Doesnāt it retrigger the sample, tho? If itās longer in time than the pattern allows?
It has 256mb RAM, the 8gb is internal flash storage.
Yes you right I share your point of view.
in 1.60 firmware version the product for the new price tag is really a better match. (before it was too expensive and bordering on disrespect, compared to the prototype and what it planned to offer as functionalities.
Once digested the history of the device and the features it offers in version 1.60
if we look at the good points, there are still a lot!
- If someone look for a one device to make everything (like a daw) the MPC Live is the best, the MC707 come close but boring to program due to its tiny screen and the general appearance of the device leaves a little on its hunger it light and plastic, Roland Aira lineā¦
- If someone need a real high quality live performance stems player with a real sound because of the DSI Filter - for sure if you didnāt like to filter a couple of stems in the middle of something like if you add on bottom a real drum machine and on top synthesis like an argon8 or an A4 (I am a little naughty it is much better than a sample player) you may disappointed with the Toraiz SP16
The best way to not be too disappointed with the SP16 is to see it as a rhythm machine that we customize with ācustomā samples one-shot and small loops, mostly one-shots but no problem with the loops and its timestretch works well from my point of view. Do not forget the slices in its audio files for small synth programs prepared beforehand on the computer (it is certain that the computer is important to prepare its parts)
But it can do way more than that. (controlling iPad or gear from midi, sampling and itās great at that with a very nice recorded sound) Also effects are less in number compared to the MPC, I find them way better quality/usableā¦ shame thereās not few different reverb algorithmā¦
The possibilities of modulations are much more limited than on an octatrack, the octatrack remains the best option if you want to experiment on audio and transform it into something radically different ā¦ you will not be able with the toraiz SP16 to end up with āsomething radically differentā
But 16 sample slots in STEREO with a 4 bars sequencer with p-locking limited capabilities, a warm filter, and 8 outputs are still some strong pros compared to the others (but sure it had cons)
The new playlist can give better thoughts on whatās capable ofā¦
