I read your first paragraph about 5 times, thinking, “this doesn’t make sense. what’s wrong with audio over usb?”
idiot
totally agree. I didn’t buy the A4/AR in anticipation of future OS updates, so OB is a pro all the way for me.
exactly!
But the only true con can’t be denied: time spent on OB could have been spent on improving the firmware of the boxes themselves; other than that, there is no con!
Considering that this is still pretty much in beta isnt it a bit premature to make pass final judgment?
PRO!!! - I haven’t used it yet but I recently ordered a RYTM and the whole idea of being able to record audio via USB and not using any inputs on my soundcard is just awesome. And words cant describe the fact that you can record each track individually onto individual tracks into your DAW simultaneously. I own both an SPS1 and Monomachine and do tons of overdubs so that I can mix in my DAW so this feature by itself is just amazing. Maybe it wont work properly when I first get set it up but I have faith in Elektron that they will get it right in the long run. And when they do get it right it will add value to these current and future products. And dont forget its still pretty much beta, right?
Pro: It’s free. Use of it is optional. It performs stably… for me at least.
Nice thread…
CON because i have to vote in something that does not exist…
CON too much latency to be usable for me.
But I really hope they can let me use the editors without having to also use the audio interface. That would make it awesome for me, if it meant zero or little latency,.

Really? I’d like to see where you found these facts! I’m willing to bet that they’ve sold more boxes since the announcement of OB than at any other similar period of time in the past.[/quote]
And I’m willing to bet that they haven’t sold a lot of anything since the Octatrack dominated their sales.
I’ve been seeing more and more people selling their Elektron gear.
The majority of Elektron users will agree that the OT is the best thing Elektron has ever done. I know people love their monomachines but didn’t one dude (Shaggy I think his name was) buy 12 Octatracks?)
Keep talking out of your ass buddy…
I’m willing to bet OB is attracting quite a few new customers. It’s an awesome concept and offers just enough crossover for someone coming from the software world.
The OT is great. I’d never sell mine; but it’s a bit long in the tooth compared to the AR and A4. The analog boxes and OB seem to be the direction Elektron is going and I bet their banking on those devices and concepts to drive them into the future.
Obviously speculating, but seems logical.
The voting on Overbridge at this moment:
Pro: 12
Pro/Con: 13
Con: 16
Re latency are you sure you have everything set up correctly? It’s fine on my system.
You can use the editors and still use the audio outputs.
Con - I buy machines to play machines, not a computer. And I hate how many resources are being spend on it.
-
Nobody is forcing you to use it and the Elektron machines work just fine without it.
-
A computer is a machine.
It was always gonna be a bold move! For those who don’t have access to a quality sound card its a seriously valuable asset. Less bothered about the Virus Ti aspect but can see the appeal. It’s all a bit novelty island for me. Moved away from the Ti way of working to the hands on Elektron approach in order use my ears not my eyes & now we’ve come full circle!
I’d like to say Pro but in all honesty I feel it’s been handled poorly & the hardware has suffered as a result. AR need those envelopes sorting out & the OT, well I digress…
Con (& it pains me to say it)
Con
I’ve never understood why Elektron have tried to adapt their synths to work within a computer when their who appeal is a hands on approach and a move away from computers.
Lets face it, most people have a good audio interface and tracking the audio into your DAW is easy without OB.
I found myself trying OB and suddenly realized I was staring at a screen again. Bugger that I do that for a job…
Interesting CONs …
some are like “I don’t like/need it anyway” or “Elektron should have invested this time to do OS updates and bug squashing”. It’s okay to have this oppinion, but is this a real CON?
Any hardware has limitations - as well as software. But to try to get the best out of both worlds is a good approach. I like to have my AR and AK linked to my DAW for recording via one USB interface. Quality of audio is good, multitrack recording feasable, bandwidth, latency, and stability might be improved.
Getting a tool in the next version providing a real librarien makes me happy. To copy/paste/move sounds and samples around on the hardware isn’t an experience of effective working and I like to reorganise my gear from time to time.
This said … a big PRO
Pros - Works well with ableton and the editing and sync features make it much more appealing and useful as a production tool.
Cons - USB A/D conversion doesn’t seem quite as good as through my preamp.

Dude, better get out that rectal thermometer because you’re hallucinating again. Shaggy posted once he’d love to have 8 Octatracks (due to initial product release exuberance mostly).
The main reason you see a lot Elektron gear for sale these days is precisely due to how many are being sold in general. Use your brain man.
Considering how much I paid for it, its gotta be all Pro!!
PRO!
